Prostate & Erectile Dysfunction Q & A

What is the prostate?

Your prostate is located between your penis and bladder and is about the size of a quarter.

Though small, your prostate plays an important role in reproduction. It’s responsible for producing seminal fluid, which mixes with semen and helps sperm travel and fertilize eggs.

What is an enlarged prostate?

As men get older, their prostates grow in size. This is normal and begins around the age of 40. By the time you are 50 or 60 years old, your small, quarter-sized prostate gland may grow as large as the size of your fist. In most cases, an enlarged prostate is a benign condition, but it could be a warning sign of cancer.

Which erectile dysfunction treatments are available for prostate problems?

Apex Health Center is the area’s leading provider of the innovative GAINSWave Protocol, a scientifically-proven procedure that stimulates the nerves in your penis. Your provider uses a special device that delivers sound waves to pump up the blood flow in your penis and promote new vessel growth during a few short treatments.

Better blood flow leads to better, longer-lasting erections.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the prostate grow out of control and form cancer. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, nearly four million men in the United States suffer from prostate cancer.

Almost all prostate cancers are considered adenocarcinomas that originate from the prostate gland. There are a few other types of prostate cancer, but they’re extremely rare. They include:

  • Small cell carcinomas
  • Sarcomas
  • Transitional cell carcinomas
  • Neuroendocrine tumors

Most prostate cancers grow very slowly, but one of the most common symptoms of prostate cancer is difficulty urinating.

Can prostate problems cause erectile dysfunction?

Yes. Prostate problems can have a devastating effect on your sex life. In addition to causing difficulty urinating and ED, an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer can contribute to:

  • Low sex drive
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Dissatisfaction with sex

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms and suspect a problem with your prostate, it’s important to seek medical attention.
