Living With Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie’s Disease can be a trying time for most men. In fact, over 75% of men who have Peyronie’s disease have reported that they are stressed and depressed due to the disease. It can also have an impact on your relationship with your partner. When that becomes the case, it is critical that you are open and honest and willing to discuss any concerns you may be having with your partner. They say that Peyronie’s disease is a couple’s disease due to the effect it can have on both partners. For example, the curvature in the penis can cause pain to both the man suffering from the disease and also to his partner.

Now, when it comes to better understanding how big a problem Peyronie’s disease will be depends heavily on how bent the penis is. According to Ryan Berglund, MD, “if somebody has a ten degree curvature, it will have a little impact on function. But when you get to thirty degrees or more, that’s when it starts to become significant.” So, in other words, if the angle of the curvature is big enough, it can make sex impossible.

Peyronie’s disease can also cause erections to feel painful. The curve and pain are caused by minor injuries during sex which leads to inflammation and, over time, scarring. Luckily, this does not last, according to Drogo Montague, “when healing is complete, pain always goes away.” It is this pain during erections, however, that has caused the link between Peyronie’s disease to erectile dysfunction. Many men who have Peyronie’s disease have also reported having some degree of erectile dysfunction. It is important to note that having Peyronie’s disease does not mean you have ED, nor does having ED means that you have Peyronie’s disease. Frequently, however, you will find that someone with Peyronie’s disease has ED as well. According to Ryan Berglund, “a classic example of that would be somebody who can get rigidity closer to the body than the scar, but beyond the scar, they don’t really get the rigidity necessary for sex.” Many men also experience trouble maintaining an erection when they are dealing with Peyronie’s disease and in some cases, ED drugs can be helpful.

There are many treatments for Peyronie’s disease that can help, Apex Health Center can also assist you with these treatments. Aside from that, communication with your partner will be key, according to sex therapist Ian Kerner, PhD. He further says. “Let your partner know what’s going on and what feels good and what doesn’t, and let your partner also have the experience of giving you pleasure, even if it’s in a nontraditional way. Maybe focus a little more on the giving of pleasure as opposed to the receiving of pleasure.”
